In the midst of a challenging time for the city of Falmouth, Mayor Luke Price has officially stepped down from his role, citing personal reasons related to a new job opportunity that would interfere with his mayoral duties.
Price announced his resignation Monday, just days after record flooding overwhelmed the town, prompting emergency evacuations. The Licking River crested at 38.63 feet on Sunday—its seventh-highest level in recorded history—before receding to 30.79 feet by Tuesday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service. The river’s flood stage is 33 feet.
In a heartfelt statement, Price explained that the decision was made with his family’s best interest in mind.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I have to make a decision for the betterment of my family,” he said. “Therefore, effective immediately, I resign from my position as Mayor of Falmouth, KY.”
Before stepping down, Price issued an executive order transferring mayoral authority to Police Chief Marty Hart. Under Kentucky law, mayors are permitted to delegate executive authority to other officials in such circumstances. Hart will now serve as acting mayor until the city council appoints a permanent replacement.
The transition of leadership comes as the city continues to recover from the recent flooding. Emergency evacuation orders were lifted Monday, and officials have emphasized that city operations will continue without disruption.
Compounding the city’s challenges, Falmouth Fire Chief John Lucas also resigned on Tuesday. According to Councilman Anthony Cox, Lucas stepped down due to the mental and emotional toll of the job during this difficult period.
“Please be assured I am working diligently to best navigate these uncertain times,” Cox shared in a Facebook post. “We will keep the community informed along the way.”
Luke Price had been appointed interim mayor in January 2024 following the impeachment of former mayor Sebastian Ernst. He went on to win the office in an uncontested election later that year. A lifelong Falmouth resident and former city councilman with seven years of service, Price was widely respected for his commitment to the community.
City officials released a statement thanking Price for his service:
“The City of Falmouth extends its sincere gratitude to Mayor Price for his service and dedication to the community.”
As Falmouth works to rebuild and recover, the resilience of its leaders and citizens continues to shine through.
