Severe Weather Alert: Strong Storms, Hail, and Tornado Potential Across Southern States Starting Thursday Afternoon

Published On:

Memphis, TN – A potent weather system is expected to move through parts of Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama on Thursday, bringing the risk of severe storms, large hail, and isolated tornadoes beginning mid-afternoon and lasting into the night.

The National Weather Service offices in Memphis, Jackson, and Birmingham have issued a Level 2 (Slight Risk) for severe weather from 3 p.m. to midnight CDT on April 10. Storm activity is forecast to spark in the Mississippi Delta region before advancing eastward, with cities like Memphis, Jackson, and Birmingham in the storm’s path.

In Mississippi, areas north of Interstate 20 could see hail up to golf ball size and wind gusts up to 60 mph. While the tornado threat remains low, isolated twisters cannot be ruled out. Tennessee, especially along the I-40 corridor including Memphis, is expected to experience similar storm impacts from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Northern Alabama, including Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, may face quarter-sized hail and strong winds through 10 p.m. on Thursday.

Fortunately, rainfall totals are expected to stay below half an inch, limiting the chances of significant flooding.

Residents across the region are encouraged to stay weather-aware, tie down outdoor items, and plan ahead by knowing where to take shelter if warnings are issued. With storms expected to move quickly, alerts could be issued with minimal lead time.
