Ruben Amorim considers huge Andre Onana decision ahead of Newcastle clash

During his two years at Old Trafford, Onana has been subjected to a barrage of criticism, with former Red Devils midfielder Nemanja Matic referring to him as “one of the worst goalkeepers in Man Utd history” earlier this week.

With that hanging over him, Onana made more mistakes in Thursday’s Europa League quarter-final first leg draw with Lyon, being caught off guard by a free kick before parrying a 95th-minute strike into Rayan Cherki’s path for a late equaliser.

According to The Telegraph, Onana is concerned that he will be dropped for Sunday’s game against Newcastle, in which Amorim is expected to make a change in goal.

Altay Bayindir, 26, is waiting in the wings after making only six cup appearances this season. The Turkiye international is expected to leave the club this summer due to a lack of playing time, and he will be desperate for a chance to impress in the starting lineup.

There have been numerous reports that United may look to replace Onana this summer, with Brighton & Hove Albion’s Bart Verbruggen the most recent to be linked.

Following the game, former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel commented on Onana’s performance against Lyon. While attempting to defend these specific incidents, he admitted that he has serious concerns about the Cameroon international.

“It’s a difficult one,” he told talkSPORT. “I’m not talking about goalkeepers’ union here, but [Lyon’s first goal] is difficult because some people are running across you. But I believe he should have dealt with it.

“The second one, I believe he should have kept it. Yes, it is a hard shot, but it is aimed directly at him.

Is he the problem? Is the defense the problem? Is it midfield? I believe Ruben Amorim has a lot of issues to address. I mean, I’d be extremely uncomfortable pointing to just one player.

“But it’s not particularly enjoyable to watch, I must admit. You never feel safe. Even when you’re 2-1 up, you never feel like this is the end. You always worry that the other team will come back into the game, and they did, but a 2-2 draw away from home is not bad, and they’ve done well at Old Trafford in the Europa League.”
