DJ LeMahieu of the Yankees continues his stellar performance with a rehab assignment scheduled for the next phase

DJ LeMahieu played back-to-back games for the first time during his minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Somerset, as he recovers from a strained left calf sustained in his first Grapefruit League game of spring training.

LeMahieu had a hit Sunday and is 6-for-10 with a home run in four games with Somerset.

Aaron Boone announced that LeMahieu, who has played second base in his rehab games, will be moved to third base this week when his rehab assignment is transferred to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

His workload will increase starting Tuesday, with SWB this week as well.

With Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second and Oswaldo Cabrera making five errors, the most of any third baseman in the majors, LeMahieu could easily return to the position.

Cabrera hit a two-run double in an 11-2 win in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader in The Bronx, demonstrating his recent improvement.

Anthony Volpe hit four home runs in the first five games of the season, but he didn’t hit another until Sunday, when he hit an opposite field shot to right in the fifth inning of the first game, sparking a three-run rally. He also had two singles in Game 2, which was won 5-1.

Boone said he noticed a difference in Volpe’s swing during Friday’s batting practice, and it has carried over into the games.

“Nice and easy,” Boone described Volpe’s recent swings. “That’s what he’s capable of.”

Luis Gil resumed his throwing program on Sunday after initially postponing it.

The right-hander, who was named AL Rookie of the Year last season, has been out since the spring due to a lat strain.

He is expected to make his season debut in June.

“It’s another good step in the process,” Boone said. “Hopefully it continues to go well.”

According to Boone, Jonathan Loáisiga’s first rehab outing with Low-A Tampa was solid.

The right-hander is recovering from elbow surgery and could be a valuable addition to the bullpen midway through the season.

Tyler Matzek made his Yankees debut in the first game, which they won.

The lefty was sidelined for the spring with an oblique injury. He gave up a run in the ninth inning.

Ben Rice, who came up through the Yankees’ system as a catcher, started behind the plate for the first time Sunday.

He replaced Austin Wells in the ninth inning after starting the game at designated hitter.

Rice plays nearly every day at first base, despite being primarily the DH and backup first baseman while Giancarlo Stanton is injured.

Yerry de los Santos, a right-hander, served as the 27th man in Sunday’s doubleheader.

He replaced Max Fried in the seventh and pitched two scoreless innings before returning to SWB after the second game.
