It took until February 12 of the offseason to determine where Pete Alonso would continue his MLB career. In the end, nothing changed; he stayed in New York and remained the Mets’ slugger.
Alonso signed a two-year, $54 million contract with an opt-out after this season. So far, the Mets are hoping their first baseman doesn’t take it — he’s been on fire.
Alonso has a.342 batting average through 32 games. He has a team-high seven home runs and is tied for third in the National League with 28 RBIs.
These statistics explain why Alonso was named Major League Baseball’s National League Player of the Month on Friday.
While the Alonso news wasn’t much of a surprise, considering how hot he’s been, it caught the attention of fans around the league.

Alonso, who played college ball at the University of Florida, was selected by the Mets in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, 64th overall. He made the Opening Day roster in 2019 and has served as the team’s starting first baseman ever since.
Alonso has appeared in 152 or more games in each of his big-league seasons, with the exception of the COVID-shortened 2020 season. Last season, the 30-year-old hit 34 home runs, following two years of 40 or more home runs, 40 in 2022 and 46 in 2023.
The Mets made the playoffs last season, and Alonso appeared in 13 games. He batted.273 with four home runs and ten RBIs as the Mets were eliminated by the Dodgers in six games in the National League Championship Series.
Meanwhile, on the other side of town, Aaron Judge was named American League Player of the Month. The Yankees slugger has been on fire in 2025, batting.427 with 10 home runs and 32 RBIs.
Both the Mets and the Yankees are in first place as the month of May begins. It’s a great time to be a baseball fan in New York.
