It is difficult to describe what Bobby Witt Jr. is doing right now without using terms like “historic” or “unreal.” The Royals’ shortstop just finished a five-game stretch unlike any other in Major League Baseball history, becoming the first player in history to have ten hits, eight RBIs, six extra-base hits, four stolen bases, two home runs, and a walk-off hit in five games. Yes, ever.
Witt’s all-around dominance has fueled a Royals team that is quickly becoming one of baseball’s hottest clubs. Kansas City has now won six straight games, including a 10-0 thrashing of the White Sox on Thursday, and 15 of its last 17 overall. After a rocky start to the season, the Royals are now 23-16 and within two games of first place in the surprisingly strong AL Central.
“We are playing Royals baseball,” Witt stated following his first four-hit game of the season. “That is just how it is going to be.”
While Witt’s streak has made headlines, the Royals’ recent success has deeper roots. Their pitching staff has emerged as one of the best in the league, leading the MLB with a 1.97 ERA over the last 17 games. On Thursday, Kris Bubic pitched seven scoreless innings to complete a dominant four-game sweep of Chicago, allowing the fewest runs in franchise history (4).
Bobby Witt Jr continues to make history
Bubic, who entered the season as a question mark after Tommy John surgery, has established himself as one of the Royals’ top pitchers. His 1.98 ERA through seven starts is among the league’s best, and he is been helped by a rotation that includes Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo, and Michael Wacha, all of whom have struggled.
“We are firing on all cylinders right now,” leadoff hitter Jonathan India said following Thursday’s victory. “The rotation feeds off of each other. “Every guy wants to outperform the last guy.”
Despite the pitching brilliance, Kansas City’s offense has done just enough to keep the victories coming. Witt has been the engine, but Maikel Garcia has also emerged as a key contributor, with the Royals going a perfect 12-0 when he has multiple hits.
Jonathan India and Drew Waters have delivered timely hits, and Salvador Perez has continued to produce in limited action as a designated hitter.
The Royals are now entering more difficult territory, with series against the Red Sox and Astros looming. However, Kansas City is no longer a surprise team, as they are dominating on the mound, capitalizing offensively, and breaking records along the way. They pose a legitimate threat in the American League.
