Sebastian Walcott has been the Texas Rangers’ best prospect since late last season. He shows no signs of giving up.
The crown jewel of Texas’ 2023 international signing class is already at Double-A Frisco, where he is pitching despite the fact that he is under 21. He has space to grow and time to do so. However, within the industry, his stock continues to rise.
Baseball America released an updated Top 100 earlier this week. These rankings are based on interviews with MLB scouts, coaches, analysts, and front office executives, as well as in-person scouting by the publication’s own scouts.
As a result, Walcott’s Top 100 ranking increased significantly.
Where does Sebastian Walcott Rank Among Top MLB Prospects?
Despite being ranked No. 21 in the preseason rankings, Walcott was one of this update’s fastest risers. He climbed 13 spots to No. 9, making him one of baseball’s top ten prospects.
It’s not difficult to understand why. He has made a relatively smooth transition to Double-A baseball.
He played five games with Frisco at the end of last season after dominating in High-A baseball. A step back was expected. However, his step back has been insignificant.
In 29 games with Frisco this season, the shortstop has slashed.245/.359/.364 with two home runs and thirteen RBI. Last year, in 121 games, he hit.265/.344/.452 with 11 home runs and 56 RBI.
Last year’s performance, which earned him a spot in the MLB Futures Game held at Globe Life Field in Arlington in July, accelerated his path to the Majors.
The Rangers invited him to MLB spring training. He impressed the Rangers’ coaching staff and president of baseball operations, Chris Young.
He qualified for the MLB spring breakout game. Texas did not assign him to minor league camp until late spring training, which is unusual for a teenager.
“It’s incredible to see how far he’s come in just a year. “It’s not normal,” Young stated in March.
Last year, he was named to the South Atlantic League postseason all-star team. There, he slashed. In 116 games, he hit 261/.342/.443, with ten home runs, nine triples, 31 doubles, and 49 RBI.
He was one of the South Atlantic League leaders in total bases (192), extra-base hits (50), triples (first), hits (second), and doubles.
It may not take him long to join the Major League leaders in those categories, either.
