SNAP, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, helps low-income families in the United States buy food. In May 2025, the maximum benefit for a household of eight people has increased to $1,756. This applies across all U.S. states, including places like Texas, Florida, Washington DC, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the US Virgin Islands.
This increase is part of an annual update based on inflation. It’s meant to help families deal with the rising cost of living. If you’re already receiving SNAP, or planning to apply, here’s everything you need to know.
Why SNAP Benefits Increased in 2025
Every year, the U.S. government adjusts SNAP benefit amounts using something called the Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA). These changes are based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI-W), which tracks the prices of basic items like food and housing.
For the 2025 financial year (which ends on September 30, 2025), the USDA has raised the maximum SNAP benefit for an 8-person household to $1,756. This ensures that low-income families have enough support to buy groceries during these times of inflation.
SNAP in Texas – Over 3.2 Million People Benefit
Texas is one of the states with the highest number of SNAP recipients. The program is managed by the Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Over 3.2 million Texans get help through SNAP in 2025.
Texas uses the Lone Star Card (similar to a debit card) to send monthly payments. How much a family receives depends on their income and assets. The income limit is set at 165% of the federal poverty level, and most people must have less than $5,000 in assets.
Older adults and people with disabilities can apply more easily through the Texas Simplified Application Project (TSAP). Payments are sent based on the Eligibility Determination Group (EDG) number.
SNAP in Florida – 2.97 Million People Supported
Florida also has a huge SNAP population, with nearly 3 million residents receiving benefits. Here, the Department of Children and Families (DCF) handles the program. Benefits are delivered through an EBT card.
Florida has higher income limits—up to 200% of the federal poverty level—and no asset limits for most people. This makes it easier for families to qualify. Florida also has special programs like SUNCAP, which helps SSI (Supplemental Security Income) recipients get food benefits automatically.
People working in agriculture or tourism often have jobs only during certain seasons. SNAP in Florida helps these workers during times when they have less income. The system is also easy to use online through ACCESS Florida.
