The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) is investigating the death of an incarcerated man at California State Prison, Los Angeles County (LAC) as a homicide.

Around 7:15 p.m. on April 27, staff witnessed inmate Kenneth M. Wilson, 30, attack fellow inmate Renee A. Rodriguez, 51, in the prison’s dayroom.

Officers used chemical agents and non-lethal weapons to halt the assault. Despite emergency efforts, a Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedic pronounced Rodriguez dead at 7:53 p.m. after transferring him to an outside medical facility, according to the CDCR.

Two improvised weapons were recovered. Wilson, who was sentenced to life in prison without parole for murder in Riverside County, has been placed in a restricted housing unit. Investigations are ongoing.
