Why are Saturday's Premier League games cancelled? An explanation of the May 17 EPL scheduling break

Liverpool has won their 20th English title, and all three relegation places have been filled.

Nonetheless, there is still a lot to play for in the Premier League in 2024/25, particularly in the battle for European qualification.

Arsenal, Newcastle United, Manchester City, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Nottingham Forest are all hoping to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League in the final two matchweeks.

However, there are no Premier League fixtures scheduled for Saturday, May 17, just eight days before the season finale.

Why are there no Premier League games on Saturday, May 17?

Last April, the Premier League and the Football Association renewed their collaboration agreement for the FA Cup.

The knockout competition is the world’s oldest in club football, with the final held at Wembley Stadium after the league season ends. However, under the new agreement, the FA Cup final will take place on the penultimate weekend of the Premier League season for the next six years.

The terms also give the FA exclusive rights to the day of the final, which means no Premier League games can take place. The 2024/25 FA Cup final begins at 4:30 p.m. local time in London on Saturday, May 17, which is why there are no Premier League games on that day.

Why are Man City not playing in the Premier League this weekend?

Manchester City has advanced to the FA Cup final for the third consecutive season and will face Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium, making each team’s absence from this weekend’s Premier League action understandable.

City’s home game against Bournemouth and Palace’s match against Wolves have been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 20, at 8 p.m. BST (3 p.m. ET).

Tottenham and Manchester United’s games against Aston Villa and Chelsea have been rescheduled for Friday, May 16, to allow for extra preparation for the all-Premier League Europa League final in Bilbao on Wednesday, May 21.

Five Premier League games from matchweek 37 will be played on Sunday, May 18, including Everton’s last ever men’s game at Goodison Park. Champions Liverpool travels to Brighton on Monday.
