Alabama — An arrest was made in the case of a 4-year-old Alabama girl who was hospitalized after returning home from school with dangerously high levels of alcohol in her system.
Tracy Walker, 56, teaches at the school where Mary and Albert Singleton’s 4-year-old daughter was taken to the nurse’s office “slobbering at the mouth” and limping.
According to Mobile County Sheriff’s Office records, Walker was arrested on Wednesday and charged with aggravated child abuse.
After the story was reported by local Fox affiliate WALA, police launched an investigation into what happened to the young girl, who spent two days in the ICU with a blood alcohol level of 0.29.
As previously reported by Law&Crime, the Singletons claimed that two minutes before classes ended on April 28, they received a call from the nurse’s office regarding their daughter’s condition.
Mary Singleton told WALA that her daughter was “slobbering at the mouth, she was heavy, and the teacher handed her to me, saying we probably needed to take her to the ER.”
When the couple brought the girl to USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital, it was discovered that she had a 0.29 BAC level, which is more than three and a half times the legal limit for adults.
The girl spent two days in the intensive care unit before being released from the hospital. WALA reported that the girl was unable to return for the remainder of the school year due to her recovery.
Law&Crime reported earlier this month that an investigation had begun, and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office took charge of the case on May 6.
On Tuesday, Walker was arrested. According to WALA, the little girl told detectives from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office that her teacher gave her a drink that made her feel sick.
Walker is listed as a special education teacher on the website of Collins-Rhodes Elementary School, where the Singleton girl attended. Walker was placed on administrative leave following the first allegations against her, according to the school’s statement to WALA.
Walker remained in custody without bond on Thursday. WALA reported that a bond hearing was set for Friday.
