SHOOTING IN 2022
This is not Skilla Baby’s first gunshot wound.
In July 2022, he was shot just as his music career was taking off.
However, the injury did not cause significant damage, and the rapper attributed some of his success to the shooting.
“I got shot, they thought I was 50 Cent,” he told the Detroit Metro Times in April 2023.
“I was shot, a lot of stuff happened on the streets, and then people started listening to my music out of nowhere.
“I’m at home, eating Doritos and listening to people go crazy on the internet. They mistook me for 50 Cent because I was shot one day and then partying at a club the next.”
The rapper has previously advocated for gun safety, collaborating with Detroit city officials on a gun buyback event in February 2024 in the hopes of reducing gun violence.
“So often, people point fingers at cities and our communities for violence, but we know there are racist systems that have fueled violence and created the cycles that are truly to blame,” according to a release issued at the time.
“By taking these guns out of circulation, we’re breaking these cycles and saving lives.”
In 2019, Skilla Baby released his mixtape Push That S**t Out Skilla, which launched his music career. He signed with Geffen in 2022.
