If you receive SNAP benefits, there’s good news for you. Starting May 23, 2025, some states in the U.S. are introducing a new program that combines your usual SNAP benefits with additional stimulus payments. This extra help is designed to ease the financial burden caused by rising living costs and limited job opportunities.
If you want to know whether your state is part of this program and if you qualify, keep reading.
What Is SNAP?
SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It helps low-income families in the U.S. buy food by providing benefits through an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. This card works like a debit card and is used to purchase eligible food items at authorized stores.
What Are These New Stimulus Checks?
Along with your regular SNAP benefits, some states will now give additional stimulus payments to help families better manage their expenses. These payments aim to support citizens facing economic challenges such as increased prices and unemployment.
Which States Are Starting This Program?
The first states to offer this combined benefit program are:
- California
- Colorado
- Illinois
- New York
- New Mexico
If you live in one of these states and are already a SNAP recipient, you don’t need to apply separately. The system automatically detects eligible households.
For example, New Mexico offers a combined payment of up to $750 per household, while California provides between $300 and $600 depending on eligibility.
If your state is not on this list, don’t worry—this is only the first wave. More states may join and start payments by June.

Who Can Apply for the Combined Benefit?
Eligibility includes:
- Families with low income
- Households with minors
- Elderly people
- Current SNAP beneficiaries
Qualified recipients will usually receive payments either:
- Directly added to their EBT card, or
- Via direct deposit linked to local stimulus programs.
How to Check If You Are Eligible?
If you already get SNAP, you are likely included automatically. To confirm:
- Check your EBT card app
- Look for emails or text messages from your local social services office
- Watch for letters or official messages requesting any updated information
You generally do not need to visit any office unless specifically told to update your details.
This new program shows the government’s effort to increase financial help for struggling American families. If you think you might qualify, keep an eye on your EBT account and communications from social services to make sure you receive all the benefits you’re entitled to.
