The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified a recall by The Bakery Group—a Texas-based bakery—as Class II, signaling a moderate health risk related to undeclared allergens and artificial dye in over 700 cases of brioche bread.
Why This Recall Is Important
The affected products did not list milk, soy, or the artificial color FD&C Yellow No. 5 (tartrazine) on their labels. These ingredients are among the nine major food allergens identified by the FDA, which include eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybeans, sesame, and milk.
Allergic reactions to milk and soy can range from mild symptoms like hives, rashes, and swelling to severe responses including anaphylaxis. Yellow No. 5 may also cause allergic reactions, especially in people sensitive to aspirin.
What You Need to Know
The Bakery Group recalled:
- 629 cases of Dense Brioche Pullman Loaf (product code 654203)
- 104 cases of 4.5-inch Brioche Hamburger Buns (product code 54500)
These products were distributed to wholesalers in Texas from December 24, 2024, through March 12, 2025. The bread came in brown boxes marked either Ben E. Keith or Rodeo Goat Casa Linda. The loaves were packed seven per case, while buns were packed 48 per case.
The labeling error was found during a routine inspection by the Texas Health and Human Services Department. The Bakery Group attributed the problem to human error in their labeling and packaging process and said corrective steps were taken by March 19.
No illnesses have been reported so far.
