Cookie Recall Alert: FDA Raises Risk Level to Highest Category

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently upgraded a cookie recall to Class I, the most serious risk level. This comes after concerns that some cookies may contain undeclared allergens, which can be dangerous for people with food allergies.

What Happened?

New Grains Gluten Free Bakery announced a recall earlier this month after discovering that some of their baked goods—including four types of cookies—may contain eggs, soy, or milk. These ingredients were not listed on the packaging, putting allergic customers at risk.

Millions of Americans suffer from food allergies or sensitivities. Allergic reactions can range from mild symptoms to severe, life-threatening conditions like anaphylaxis.

The FDA identifies nine major food allergens:
milk, eggs, sesame, fish, tree nuts, crustacean shellfish, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans.

If these allergens are not clearly listed on a product, it can cause serious health issues for people allergic to them.

Which Products Are Affected?

The recalled products include gluten-free versions of:

• Chocolate Chip Cookies
• Frosted Sugar Cookies
• Coconut Macaroon Cookies
• Brownie Chocolate Chip Cookies

Due to printing problems, ingredient lists and allergen warnings on the packaging were missing or unreadable. Additionally, lot and date codes on the packaging were hard to read or missing, making it tough to identify the affected batches.

Where Were These Cookies Sold?

The cookies were sold in Utah, packaged in clear plastic bags weighing four ounces, with six or eight cookies per bag depending on the type.

If you bought any of the affected cookies, do not eat them. Instead, return them to the store for a full refund.

Additional Information

This recall follows an earlier one from the same bakery for breads, bagels, and croutons that may also contain undeclared eggs, soy, or milk.

No illnesses have been reported so far related to these cookies.
