The University of Louisville is mourning the loss of former linebacker P.J. Blue, who passed away at the age of 27. The school confirmed the news on Monday, though no cause of death has been disclosed.
Blue, an Alabama native, joined the Louisville Cardinals football program in 2016 as a highly touted prospect. Unfortunately, a torn ACL delayed his collegiate debut. He eventually took the field in the 2018 season, appearing in 11 games and recording 39 tackles. However, another knee injury in 2019 sidelined him once again, ultimately ending his playing career.
In a statement shared on social media, the Louisville football program honored their former player:
“We are saddened by the passing of Cardinal Forever P.J. Blue. Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.”
Blue’s football journey began at Park Crossing High School, where he earned numerous accolades, including All-Metro and First-Team All-State honors. He was also recognized as an Under Armour All-American and a nominee for the U.S. Army All-American Game. His potential as a standout defender drew praise from then-Louisville defensive coordinator Todd Grantham.
“Anytime you can get big guys who can run and hit, you’re going to be good on defense,” Grantham once said. “He has length, size, and the ability to run. He has position flexibility. I think he’s got a bright future.”
Although his playing career was cut short, Blue left a lasting impression on teammates, coaches, and fans alike. Tributes have poured in across social media from the college football community, offering condolences to his family and remembering his impact on and off the field.
