"Intentionally left in the cold": 97-year-old grandma froze to death after family member left her in a heatless home without her walker or phone, coroner says

The death of a Colorado woman whose body was discovered in January was ruled a homicide by the county coroner, and one of her own family members could be held accountable.

Corrye Brewer, 97, was reported missing by her family during a visit on Jan. 25, prompting the Colorado Bureau of Investigation to issue a senior alert.

In their description of Brewer, the CBI included the fact that the grandmother “suffer[ed] from a cognitive impairment which may affect her memory,” making her even more vulnerable in the freezing weather.

Two days later, human remains were discovered near an intersection in Calhan, Colorado. The body was later identified as Brewer.

Months later, on April 9, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office released a report on Brewer’s autopsy, classifying her death as homicide.

According to their report, obtained by local CBS affiliate KKTV, Brewer died of hypothermia as a result of being “intentionally left in the cold without any way to return home, get to adequate shelter, or call for help.”.

According to KKTV’s report on the coroner’s findings, Brewer was allegedly abandoned at an unoccupied house in the area by her own daughter. The elderly woman was left without her walker or phone.

According to the report, the weather on the night of Jan. 24, when Brewer was allegedly brought to the house, was windy, with snow showers and temperatures as low as 16°F. Brewer was reportedly discovered dead on the same property days later, according to KXRM’s coverage of the coroner’s investigation.

Some of Brewer’s surviving family members spoke to KCNC, a local CBS affiliate, which reported on family tensions, including those with whom the grandmother was staying at the time.

Brewer’s granddaughter, Shari Robinson, told KCNC, “We just want it brought to light. She’s gone, and we’re hoping that someone will take the time to provide answers for the family.”

Nobody has been charged in Brewer’s death. According to KKTV, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating the incident, and the District Attorney will review the case.
