A train struck several pedestrians on a railroad bridge in Fremont, Ohio, killing at least two adults, injuring one toddler, and leaving a young child missing, according to the mayor.

A mother and daughter, 58 and 38, were killed while visiting from Fort Wayne, Indiana, according to Mayor Danny Sanchez on Sunday evening. The injured child, who is about 14 months old, has been taken to a hospital in Toledo, according to the mayor.

A five-year-old is missing, and the Sandusky River, which runs beneath the bridge, is the focus of ongoing recovery efforts, according to the mayor.

According to Sanchez, the victims were part of a “very large family” that went fishing in Fremont, about 40 miles southeast of Toledo. It is unclear whether any other members of the family were injured.

“We have many, many cooperative law enforcements, and fire and EMS and many first responders here tonight,” said the mayor to reporters. “This is a very, very unfortunate tragedy that has hit our community today.”

CNN affiliate WTVG reported that two dive teams, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers, and Ottawa and Sandusky County sheriff’s deputies are assisting with the search.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts are with those affected, their loved ones, and the community during this difficult time. We are cooperating closely with local authorities in their investigation,” Norfolk Southern Railway said in a statement to CNN.

Fremont police reported that the Miles Newton bridge was still closed on Sunday night.
