A 21-year-old woman’s body was discovered in an Illinois forest preserve two days after her mother last saw her, officials said.
On Sunday, May 18, the Orland Park Police Department announced that Reanna Hammad’s body “was discovered on a walking trail in a forest preserve in unincorporated Palos Township.” In a statement to PEOPLE, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirms her death by suicide.
“Her body was found at 5:50 yesterday morning in Spears Woods, part of the Forest Preserves of Cook County,” Carl Vogel, Director of Communications for the agency, tells PEOPLE. “Our deepest condolences to the family.”
The tragic news comes just two days after the young woman was last seen by her mother at her home around 11 a.m. local time on Friday, May 16.
Later that day, she could have been near Spear Woods, near the intersection of West 87th Street and South LaGrange Road in Palos Township, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators told the outlet that Hammad was wearing a black sweater, black pants, and a black hijab when she went missing.
Officials did not have any additional information about the incident, and the investigation is ongoing.
“The Orland Park Police Department expresses our deepest condolences to the family of Reanna Hammad of unincorporated Palos Township,” according to the department’s statement.
