Louisiana Meat Processor Recalls 100 Pounds of Sausage Due to Possible Listeria Risk

Bourgeois Smokehouse, a meat processor based in Thibodaux, Louisiana, has voluntarily recalled about 100 pounds of ready-to-eat smoked andouille sausage because of possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria.

The recalled sausages were sold at Rouses Market stores in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

Why This Recall Matters

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) warns that Listeria contamination can cause a serious illness called listeriosis. This infection can cause symptoms such as:

  • Fever and muscle aches
  • Headaches and stiff neck
  • Confusion and loss of balance
  • Diarrhea and other stomach issues

Listeriosis is especially dangerous for pregnant women, as it can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or deadly infections in newborns. Elderly people and those with weak immune systems are also at high risk.

Details About the Recalled Product

  • The sausage was made on May 12, 2025.
  • Products do not have a USDA inspection mark because they were labeled in-store.
  • Available for purchase since May 13 at Rouses Market stores in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
  • FSIS classified the recall as Class I, meaning there is a high risk of serious illness or death.
  • No illnesses have been reported so far related to this product.

What the Experts Say

According to FSIS reports, ready-to-eat meat products like smoked sausage can support the growth of Listeria if contaminated during storage or handling after cooking. These products are riskier because they are often eaten without further cooking, which would normally kill bacteria.

FSIS recommends strict sanitation during all processing steps to prevent contamination after the meat has been cooked.

What You Should Do

If you bought this sausage, check your fridge and freezer for the product. If you have it, do not eat it. Instead, throw it away or return it to the store where you bought it.

If you experience symptoms of listeriosis after eating the sausage, seek medical attention immediately.
