Wells Enterprises, also known as Wells Dairy, has voluntarily recalled 22 varieties of ice cream and frozen yogurt products distributed to over 100 facilities across the U.S. The recall was issued on April 25, 2025, after concerns about hard plastic contamination in the frozen goods.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) classified the recall as Class II, meaning consumption may cause temporary or medically reversible health issues, but serious harm is unlikely.
Why This Recall Matters
Hard plastic contamination poses a risk of dental injury or choking if accidentally consumed. Product recalls protect public health by removing potentially dangerous food items from stores and food service operations.
Although this recall is not considered life-threatening, the presence of foreign objects in food remains a serious safety concern.
What You Need to Know
The affected ice cream and frozen yogurt products come in 3-gallon containers and were distributed to 103 centers nationwide, including restaurants, cafeterias, and other food service providers.
The recall includes multiple flavors and brands, such as private-label and partner-distributed items. The largest recalled lot is 5,280 tubs of Vanilla Frozen Yogurt.
All affected products carry “Best If Used By” dates ranging from March to October 2026.

What Experts Say
Byron D. Chaves, professor of Food Science and Technology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, explained that plastic contamination can happen during large-scale production, often from toppings, utensils, or packaging materials.
He noted that plastic pieces can cause injuries like cuts, choking, or damage to teeth and gums. However, since this recall is Class II, the risk is considered lower, and the contaminated pieces may be noticeable to consumers, allowing them to avoid harm.
What Happens Next
Consumers and foodservice distributors should check their inventory for the recalled lots and immediately remove any affected products from circulation.
