Dolly Parton Opens Up About Late Husband Carl Dean’s Illness and Passing

Country music legend Dolly Parton has shared new details about the illness and passing of her husband, Carl Dean, who died nearly three months ago.

In an interview with The Independent on May 28, Dolly, 79, revealed that Carl, 82, had been “ill for quite a while” before he passed away in March.

Finding Peace Amid Loss

Dolly said, “I really feel his presence. I just try to go on because I know I have to.” She added that while she found some peace knowing Carl was no longer suffering, it doesn’t lessen the pain of losing him or the loneliness she feels.

As a woman of faith, Dolly believes they will be reunited in the afterlife. “I truly believe that I’m going to see him again someday,” she said.

Coping After Almost 60 Years Together

Dolly and Carl were married in May 1966, two years after meeting in Nashville at a laundromat—the same day Dolly moved to the city to start her music career.

Speaking about her grief, Dolly explained how she copes with the loss: “I see him every day in my memories and in my heart, in everything we built together. You have to make new plans, but that’s the hardest part.”

Earlier in May, during a virtual interview with Today, Dolly became emotional talking about their 60 years together. “I’ve loved him since I was 18 years old. It’s a big adjustment trying to change habits and patterns. I’ll do fine because I’m very involved in my work—that’s the best thing that could happen to me. But I’ll always miss him and love him. He was a great partner.”

Public Announcement of Carl’s Passing

Dolly announced Carl Dean’s death on Instagram on March 3, writing, “Carl and I spent many wonderful years together. Words can’t do justice to the love we shared for over 60 years. Thank you for your prayers and sympathy.”

Dolly Parton’s heartfelt words show the deep love and bond she shared with Carl Dean, as well as her strength and faith while navigating life after his passing.
