A middle school in Rutherford County was evacuated after students were accused of sparking a fire

SMYRNA, Tenn. – Rutherford County Schools reported that two students started a fire on Thursday, resulting in an evacuation.

According to RCS, two students brought a lighter to Smyrna Middle School and lit a piece of paper, which spread to a shelf of textbooks, causing a fire in a classroom.

“As we previously reported, all students and employees were safely evacuated and did an excellent job. Our school resource officer and administration conducted a thorough investigation and identified the students who started the fire; they will be disciplined in accordance with our code of conduct once the fire department’s investigation is completed,” RCS stated.

According to Rutherford County Schools, a classroom fire prompted an evacuation at Smyrna Middle School.

“First and foremost, all students are safe and accountable. However, we did evacuate all students and employees due to a reported fire in one classroom. “The fire department is on the scene and is looking into the cause of the fire,” RCS reports.

RCS also states that all students have been accounted for and fed lunch. According to the district, everyone was able to follow previously practiced safety procedures.

“The students will remain outside until the investigation is completed and the school has been cleared by the fire department.

Buses will run on their regular schedules today, but any parent who wishes to pick up their child early may do so. The school staff will use laptops to check on students outside. Please bring your photo ID and be patient throughout this process.”
