On Friday, one of the craziest games of the 2025 MLB season so far occurred at Wrigley Field in Chicago. The Chicago Cubs appeared to be on their way to an easy victory over the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, with the home team leading by six runs entering the eighth inning.
However, the Diamondbacks erupted for 10 runs in the top of the eighth inning, taking a four-run lead. Unfortunately for Arizona, the euphoria was fleeting.
The Cubs responded quickly, scoring six runs in the bottom of the inning before Ryan Pressly shut down the Diamondbacks in the ninth inning for the pitching win in a 13-11 Chicago victory.
The Diamondbacks and Cubs scored 16 runs in the eighth inning, creating Wrigley Field history. According to Sarah Langs of MLB.com, it was the most combined runs scored in an inning in the ballpark’s history.
Wrigley Field is the second-oldest ballpark in the major leagues. It was built in 1914, and only the Boston Red Sox’s Fenway Park (1912) is older than the Cubs’ North Side home.
Following the game, Craig Counsell, the Cubs’ second-year manager, shared his thoughts on his team’s recent adventure.
“It was crazy,” Counsell said at the postgame press conference (via Marquee Sports Network). “I mean, we gave up ten runs in one inning and won. It was a wild game, but we persevered. There are 27 outs in a game, and this kind of demonstrates it.”
The Cubs and Diamondbacks will resume their three-game series on Saturday, with Chicago’s Ben Brown facing Arizona’s Zac Gallen.
