According to a study, Kentucky is a terrible state for single people

A study conducted by WalletHub ranks the best and worst states for singles in 2023. Experts compared all 50 states in the country and classified their findings into three major categories:

  • Romance and fun
  • Dating opportunities
  • Dating economics

These are the top ten worst states for singles.

1: West Virginia

According to data, West Virginia is the least desirable state for singles because it offers few opportunities for “romance and fun.” The state has been ranked 50th on the list for several years.

However, in 2023, West Virginia ranked 46th for “dating opportunities” and 42nd in “dating economics.”

2: Arkansas

Arkansas is the second-worst state for singles looking for love in the United States, ranking 49th after West Virginia.

The state is ranked 47th for “dating opportunities” and 44th for “dating and fun.” However, it received a slightly higher score in the “dating economics” category, at 34.

3: North Dakota

North Dakota has the lowest number of dating opportunities in the country. The Peace Garden State ranked 50th for “dating opportunities” and 45th for “romance and fun,” respectively.

However, it ranked much higher in the “dating economics” category, placing sixth.

4: Wyoming

Wyoming is ranked 47th overall, with few dating opportunities. The Equality State finished second-to-last in the “dating opportunities” category and 43rd in the “romance and fun” category.

However, there is a silver lining: Wyoming is the 19th best state for “dating economics,” making it one of the most cost-effective states for dating in the United States.

5: Kentucky

Rounding out the bottom five worst states to live in for singles is Kentucky, which has the highest opportunities for “romance and fun” at number 31.

The state placed 39th in “dating economics” and 43rd in “dating opportunities.”

According to WalletHub’s study, Mississippi has one of the fewest movie theatres per capita, contributing to its 47th place ranking in the “romance and fun” category.

Overall, Mississippi ranked 45th in the worst place for singles to live, 29th in “dating economics,” and 36th in “dating opportunities” categories.

7: Alaska

Alaska ranks 44th among states for singles, with the fewest restaurants per capita.

It ranked last for “romance and fun,” 46th for “dating economics,” and a slightly more promising 31st for “dating opportunities.”

8: South Carolina

With an overall ranking of 43, South Carolina has one of the highest crime rates on the list. Having said that, the state’s dating economics ranked first, making it the least expensive state to date.

However, its 48th ranking for “dating opportunities” and 33rd ranking for “romance and fun” placed it among the top ten worst states for singles.

9: Alabama

Alabama was ranked 42nd worst state for singles to live in, ranking 40th in “romance and fun” and 41st in “dating opportunities”.

However, it was ranked 20th as the most economical state, trailing Wyoming.

10: Montana

Montana, known for its stunning scenery and wildlife, completes the top ten worst states for singles in the United States. The Treasure State has few dating opportunities and chances for “romance and fun,” ranking 44th and 32nd, respectively.

However, it is not all doom and gloom. WalletHub ranked it as the 12th best state for “dating economics.”

Gender Balance

When looking for a partner, the gender pool is important. According to WalletHub data, Georgia, Maryland, Utah, South Dakota, and North Dakota have the lowest gender balance of singles.

States with the highest rates included Maine, Nevada, and Vermont.

Some singles have found success on dating apps such as Bumble, Hinge, and Tinder.

Others prefer to meet their partner the old-fashioned way, by going out with their friends or volunteering.

Washington and Colorado have the greatest number of online dating opportunities.

In contrast, singles who use mobile dating apps have a better chance of finding a potential love match in states such as Utah and Hawaii.
