Because of calendar quirks related to weekends and federal holidays, a portion of Alabama residents receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) will receive two payments in their accounts over the course of four months in 2025.

According to the Social Security Administration (SSA), SSI payments are typically issued on the first of each month. When the first falls on a weekend or a federal holiday, payments are made on the last business day of the preceding month.

The change ensures that recipients are not financially harmed by delays, but it also results in two payments being delivered within the same month.

SSI recipients will get payments in:

  • May : May 1 and May 30
  • August : August 1 and August 29
  • October : October 1 and October 31
  • December : December 1 and December 31

June 1 is a Sunday, so the payment is made on May 30. Similarly, the second August, October, and December payments are advanced to avoid the Labor Day holiday, the Saturday beginning of November, and the New Year’s Day holiday, respectively.

It is critical for recipients to understand that these double-payment months do not include additional funds or bonus checks.

According to the SSA, the second payment is simply the benefit for the following month, which is issued early. For example, after receiving two payments in May, recipients will not receive another SSI payment in June.

Regular Social Security retirement benefits are paid on a different schedule depending on the recipient’s birthdate.

Those who receive both Social Security and SSI typically receive their Social Security payment on the third of each month and their SSI payment on the first.

The SSA keeps a complete schedule of benefit payments for the current and upcoming calendar years.
