MLB roundup: The Nationals defeat the Mets after rallying from a 6-run deficit

CJ Abrams scored on Pete Alonso’s throwing error in the ninth inning, and the Washington Nationals rallied from a six-run deficit to beat the visiting New York Mets 8-7 on Sunday.

Alex Call doubled to lead off the ninth against Ryne Stanek (0-2), and pinch runner Jacob Young advanced to third on a groundout. Before James Wood walked, Abrams singled to right, bringing Young in to tie the game. Luis Garcia Jr. hit a grounder to Alonso, but his throw eluded Stanek, who was covering first.

Jorge Lopez (3-0) recorded the final out in the top of the ninth.

Juan Soto, Luis Torrens, and Mark Vientos each had two hits for New York, which lost for only the second time in the last ten games.

Riley Adams hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning to bring the Nationals within 7-6, and Dylan Crews homered for Washington.

Yankees 11, Blue Jays 2 (Game 1)

Austin Wells capped a six-run third inning with a bases-loaded double off a frustrated Kevin Gausman as host New York cruised past Toronto in the first game of a doubleheader.

Wells gave New York a 6-1 lead with a double off the right-center field fence on a full-count fastball, forcing Gausman out of the game. Gausman (2-3), who gave up six runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings, was ejected as he walked off the field. Toronto’s Addison Barger had two hits and an RBI, but the team has lost six of seven games.

Max Fried of New York (5-0) allowed one run on six hits in six innings and has won seven consecutive decisions dating back to last season. Anthony Volpe homered and drove in two runs, Jazz Chisholm Jr. added two RBIs, and Aaron Judge had two hits to extend his on-base streak to 23 games and finish the game with a.412 batting average.

Yankees 5, Blue Jays 1 (Game 2)

Aaron Judge hit a tiebreaking homer to highlight a three-run sixth inning as host New York beat Toronto to complete a doubleheader sweep.

A day after his 33rd birthday, Judge broke his nine-game home run drought by lining a first-pitch cutter from Toronto starter Chris Bassitt (2-2) into the right-center field seats. Judge extended his on-base streak to 24 games and finished the doubleheader with a major-league-best.406 batting average. Trent Grisham hit Bassitt’s third pitch for a home run.

In the third inning, Anthony Santander hit a tying home run off New York starter Clarke Schmidt, snapping a 0-for-25 streak. Toronto lost for the seventh time in eight games and was limited to three hits. Bassitt allowed four runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.

Mariners 7, Marlins 6

Logan Evans won his major league debut by pitching five solid innings, and Cal Raleigh hit his American League-leading tenth home run as Seattle defeated Miami.

J.P. Crawford also homered for the AL West-leading Mariners, who won their sixth straight series. Evans, promoted from Triple-A Tacoma after M’s ace Logan Gilbert was placed on the 15-day injured list after allowing two hits, three walks, and three strikeouts.

Chandler Simpson broke the tie in the top of the fifth inning when he scampered home from third on Randy Vasquez’s (1-3) wild pitch. Simpson added insurance in the ninth with a two-out RBI single to left, scoring Travis Jankowski and finishing 3-for-4.

Littell pitched five innings, allowing five hits and two runs. Four relievers pitched hitless ball over the final four innings, with Pete Fairbanks pitching the ninth for his sixth save and second in as many nights.

Red Sox 13, Guardians 3

Ceddanne Rafaela, Boston’s ninth-place hitter, hit a three-run home run and had five RBIs, while Rob Refsnyder and Rafael Devers also went deep in the team’s road win over Cleveland.

Boston outscored Cleveland 20-6 in winning the final two games of this three-game set. Jarren Duran of the Red Sox had four hits and an RBI, while Refsnyder and Kristian Campbell each drove in two.

Boston’s Brayan Bello (2-0) allowed six hits and three walks in his second start, with Nolan Jones’ three-run homer in the sixth and final inning the only exception. Meanwhile, Logan Allen (1-2) allowed seven runs, nine hits, and three walks in 4 1/3 innings for Cleveland, which made four errors and had some poor baserunning while losing its first 2025 home series.

Giants 3, Rangers 2

Heliot Ramos led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a “Little League home run,” capitalizing on two Texas throwing errors to circle the bases on an infield single and give host San Francisco a walk-off victory.

Ramos cut reliever Luke Jackson’s first pitch between the mound and third base, where Jackson bare-handedly threw it past first baseman Jake Burger. Burger chased down the ball in foul territory down the right field line, but his attempt to shoot down Ramos streaking for third was off-target, allowing the Giant to score.

Camilo Doval (2-1) earned the win after needing only 10 pitches to retire the Rangers in order in the top of the ninth. Jackson (0-3) suffered the loss. Marcus Semien had a two-run single for Texas. Wilmer Flores of San Francisco drew a bases-loaded walk, and Christian Koss added an RBI single.

Jonathan India had three hits, going 2-for-3 with a walk, a run, and an RBI on a sacrifice fly for the Royals. Salvador Perez went 2-for-4, recording his third multi-hit game in his last four starts.

Urias hit reliever Jordan Leasure (0-2)’s first pitch 398 feet over the left field fence, driving in ghost runner Jacob Wilson and giving the Athletics their fourth win in five games.

Brent Rooker went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, and RBI as the Athletics won consecutive home series for the first time this season. For Chicago, Joshua Palacios went 2-for-4 with a home run as the team finished 3-7 on its 10-game road trip.

Brendan Donovan doubled in a run, and Lars Nootbaar had two hits and one run for the Cardinals, who had won three of their previous four games.

Reds 8, Rockies 1

Nick Lodolo pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, Noelvi Marte had three hits and three RBIs, and Cincinnati defeated Colorado in Denver to sweep the three-game series.

Cincinnati had 14 hits and won four games in a row, matching a season high. Lodolo (3-2) went 5 2/3 innings without allowing a hit before Jordan Beck legged out an infield single to shortstop. Lodolo struck out nine in his longest outing in 2025.

Kyle Farmer singled in the seventh, and Alan Trejo, acquired from Texas on Saturday, led off the eighth with a single before scoring on Beck’s sacrifice fly. Bradley Blalock (0-1), recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque to start, gave up six runs on seven hits in four-plus innings.

Alex Verdugo had four hits and two RBIs, while Marcell Ozuna had two hits and an RBI for Atlanta, which had won seven of eight.

Dodgers 9, Pirates 2

Andy Pages extended his hot streak with four hits, a home run, and a career-high four RBIs as Los Angeles overcame starter Tyler Glasnow’s early injury departure to defeat visiting Pittsburgh.

Pages had an RBI single in a four-run first inning and a two-run homer in a three-run fifth inning to help the Dodgers overcome an early 2-0 deficit and win their second game in a row after losing four of their previous five. He had ten hits during the three-game series.

Glasnow allowed back-to-back home runs to the Pirates’ Andrew McCutchen and Enmanuel Valdez in the first inning before leaving the game with right shoulder discomfort after warming up in the second. He also left the previous start with lower leg cramps. McCutchen had four hits, and Pittsburgh’s starter, Bailey Falter (1-3), allowed seven runs (five earned) on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
