So far in the 2025 MLB season, Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s journey from Japanese superstar to big-league ace appears to be straight out of a storybook.
After taking some time to adjust during his first year in the majors in 2024, he rediscovered his rhythm later on and played an important role in the Dodgers’ World Series victory.
Now, as the reigning champions try to make it two in a row, Yamamoto has taken things to the next level, and the rest of the league is taking notice.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto Establishing Himself as an MLB Star
Yamamoto has firmly established himself in the Cy Young conversation and even earned some respect for the MVP this season.
Yamamoto recorded six scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves on Friday, lowering his ERA to 0.90.
His ERA does not even tell the complete story. In 40 innings over seven starts, the Japanese ace has 49 strikeouts and 13 walks. Furthermore, he has been one of the few Dodger pitchers to remain healthy this season.
The league has recognized his dominance. Yamamoto was named NL Pitcher of the Month by MLB based on his outstanding statistics.
Yamamoto’s performance against Atlanta on Friday served as yet another reminder of his potential. Faced with one of the National League’s deepest and most dangerous lineups, he allowed only one hit, zero runs, six strikeouts, and two walks over six innings.
He alternated between fastballs and crisp breaking pitches, keeping Braves batters guessing all night. His command, calmness, and ability to limit strong contact have helped him become one of the game’s most dominant pitchers.
Dodgers Take Over the National League West
The Dodgers began Friday with a 21-10 record, leading the National League West division.
While nothing is certain in such a competitive division, Yamamoto’s breakout season would help the Dodgers’ quest to repeat.
On top of Yamamoto, Los Angeles has fellow Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki, who is making progress in his first season pitching in the US.
Furthermore, the Dodgers anticipate Shohei Ohtani returning to the mound later this season, ideally by October.
Yamamoto’s breakout and the Dodgers’ strong (albeit disappointing) start have enthused fans eager for the franchise’s first back-to-back championships in club history.
The club’s investment in Yamamoto, who signed a record-breaking 12-year, $325 million contract, appears to be paying off completely. If his current trajectory continues, he will not only be an important part of a championship contender, but also the focal point of one of baseball’s best teams.
As the 2025 season begins, all eyes will be on Los Angeles. With Yamamoto at the helm, the Dodgers appear to be a juggernaut once more. And if October baseball comes through Chavez Ravine, the rest of the league better be prepared.
