A shooting broke out at a party in Texas, killing one person and injuring more than a dozen others.
During a press conference on Sunday, May 4, Houston Police Department (HPD) Assistant Chief Patricia Cantu stated that a shooting occurred at a family gathering on Cherry Hills Road on the city’s southeast side around 12:50 a.m.
An “uninvited guest”—who has not been publicly identified—arrived at the house party and was asked to leave, but then began shooting a gun, prompting other guests to draw weapons and return fire, according to Cantu.
As police arrived, Cantu reported that gunshots could still be heard, and officers discovered injured people throughout the property.
According to the assistant chief, officers on the scene devised a plan to transport any injured individuals to a nearby Jack in the Box restaurant parking lot for treatment. Paramedics from the Houston Fire Department also arrived at the scene to treat victims, but police officers were still receiving reports of ongoing gunfire.
Cantu also stated that several people were transported to a nearby hospital, while others drove themselves to local hospitals for treatment. Fourteen people were injured, and one person died — his age and identity have not been revealed. Multiple people sustained critical injuries and are undergoing surgery, while others are stable.
“It’s still very complicated,” Cantu told journalists. “It was chaotic from the get-go.”
Brandon Angel, who was at the party when the gunshots rang out, told local station ABC 13 that he feared for his life.
“You just see a lot of people start scattering, people on the floor, everybody trying to get cover, people pushing other people,” Angel said, recalling how police stopped him after he fled the house.
“We tried to get out as fast as we could, and whenever I got to the corner store to wait for my brother, I got detained,” Angel told me.
Police spokesperson Jodi Silva also told ABC 13 that, while several people were detained, no arrests had been made nearly 12 hours after the shooting.
