The Seattle Mariners have an incredible opportunity in the 2025 season. The AL West is wide open, and the Mariners have the opportunity to win the division for the first time since 2001.
Over the last few seasons, the Mariners have had strong regular-season records but no postseason success.
Their lineup has improved this season, and when healthy, they have one of baseball’s best starting rotations. One MLB analyst believes it is time for the Mariners to go for it.
Mariners Need to Go All-In For Division Title
MLB Now featured a discussion about the Mariners and Athletics as they prepare for a three-game series this week. They are currently first and second in the AL West, and this series will be a good opportunity to see how they compare.
Joel Sherman stated, “They’ve made the playoffs once since 2001, and there are 30 teams in the major leagues, 29 of which have played in the World Series, but the Seattle Mariners have not.” They can’t keep playing at a 54% winning percentage.”
The Mariners are getting solid production from players like Cal Raleigh, who leads the league in home runs (12), and Jorge Polanco is having a breakout season, batting .380 with nine home runs and 26 RBIs. Their offense has failed them in recent years, but that does not seem to be the case this season.
Starting Pitchers Need to Stay Healthy
So far this season, the Mariners’ starters have been hit by the injury bug. They lost George Kirby in Spring Training and recently lost Logan Gilbert, one of baseball’s best pitchers, to an elbow injury.
Both pitchers are expected to return in May, and their addition to a rotation that already includes Luis Castillo, Bryce Miller, and Bryan Woo should cause problems for opposing hitters.
The Mariners’ 3.72 team ERA is the 12th best in baseball. Aside from their rotation, the Mariners boast one of baseball’s best closers. Andres Munoz is off to a great start, pitching 16.0 innings while allowing only five hits and zero runs.
While no team in the AL West is clearly superior to the others, the division will most likely remain competitive throughout the season. The Astros have dominated this division for many years, but their offseason changes have them looking like a.500 team rather than a playoff contender.
Furthermore, the American League is the lesser of the two leagues. So, not only do the Mariners have a good chance of winning the AL West this season, but they also have a good chance of making it to the World Series for the first time in franchise history.
