ON A ROLL. Famous sandwich firm and Subway rival will establish 'first-of-its-kind' restaurant, CEO declares 'new chapter begins'

The once-thriving Subway competitor has suffered a series of setbacks in recent years, being dubbed “on its last legs” as outlets in state after state were closed.

At its peak, the brand, which wooed the nation with its high quality deli meats and sandwiches served on its unique conveyor belt system, had 5,000 stores in the United States, second only to Subway.

Only 148 were still active in December 2024.

But just over five years ago, it bit off more than it could chew, overexpanding and burdening franchise owners with excessive costs that drained their profits.

However, there is hope for its legions of devoted fans, one of whom lamented that they “would always grab a sub before going to the beach in the summer.”

Its CEO recently announced the “grand arrival” of its first Qube concept location in Alpena, Northeastern Michigan, which opened on May 8 at 320 Johnson Street.

The avant-garde design has approximately 65650 square feet of layouts, including drive-thrus and walk-up windows, putting the convenience back in convenience food.

The modular plan will eventually include self-service lockers and kiosk ordering.

The restaurants will be built like giant Lego bricks, almost ready-made in factories off-site and then assembled on-site.

Despite the funky building innovations, the menu will still include traditional Quianos favorites.

Chicken Carbonara and Classic Italian Subs will continue to impress hungry customers.

Philly Fries or Tots topped with delectable Black Angus Steak, sautéed peppers and onions, queso blanco, and banana peppers will commemorate the chain’s 45th anniversary.

Neel Patel, CEO of REGO Restaurant Group, which owns Quiznos, stated, “The launch of the Qube marks a pivotal moment in Quiznos’ growth strategy, and we are thrilled that this new chapter begins in Alpena, Michigan.”

“This innovative new footprint is designed to quickly open up exciting new opportunities for current and future franchisees.”

“We are excited to share our beloved toasted subs with the Alpena Qmmunity and showcase how the Qube redefines convenience, making our delicious, high-quality food more accessible than ever.”

Konczak, a local businessman, commented: “A brand like Quiznos, with its strong potential for continued growth, is the ideal partner for the introduction of the BCubed structure.”

The Alpena Quiznos is the sixth in the state, but the first in Northeast Michigan, with the nearest being more than three hours away.
