The New York Mets continue to lead the National League East as the season enters its second month. Following their loss in the NLCS in 2024, New York made one of the league’s largest offseason signings.
However, their bullpen requires improvement around closer Edwin Diaz.
The Mets did, however, add Genesis Cabrera and Colin Poche to their roster to help Ryne Stanek and company.
Both lefties are used to setting up roles. If they come in and perform well, the Mets could transform from a great team to one of the league’s elite clubs.
Cabrera and Poche join a bullpen that is in desperate need of left-handed pitchers. Carlos Mendoza now has more options when things get tricky later in the game. All he needs from them is solid pitching to assist Diaz and Stanek.
Poche and Cabrera entered the league in 2019, but neither are what they once were. However, both players are young enough to recover and contribute to the Mets’ success for another season.
After coming so close to winning the World Series last year, the Mets pushed their chips to the middle and should remain aggressive in terms of roster upgrades.
Bringing in these two relievers might be enough for New York. This year’s trade market has no left-handed relievers available. Teams also want to trade with the Mets. All of the players on their target list play for teams that are currently in playoff contention.
Regardless of how their new relievers perform, New York should continue to win games. Their starting pitching is excellent, and their offense is as strong as ever.
Soto is getting back on track after signing his massive contract. If he returns to his form from last season, the Mets have a good chance of reaching the World Series for the first time since 2015.
