Comfortable weather brings big turnout to Take Kids Fishing Day

The cooler temperatures and the fact that no rain fell in the morning appear to have contributed to some successful Take Kids Fishing events, as Jeffers’ Bend Environmental Center was packed on Saturday.

This was the 24th Take Kids Fishing Day event held at the center off Metcalfe Lane, and the turnout was incredible, with Jeffers Bend’s Charles Turner describing it as one of their largest crowds in years, with kids playing water games and fishing with their families.

There were even a few contenders for Big Jeff, an enormous catfish that lives in those waters, but he wasn’t sure if the fish of the hour had been caught.

He believes there are still a couple of Big Jeffs swimming around in there, and people have caught some absolutely massive catfish in the past.

Turner says they host Take Kids Fishing not only to bring families together in a fun way, but also to provide kids who might not otherwise have the opportunity to do something like fishing with some positive memories.

And the kids were definitely fishing, with everyone catching something and some reeling in double digits. There were also water slides, a water-line repair station, and a water obstacle course.

After Take Kids Fishing Day, Jeffers Bend will be closed to the public for the remainder of Memorial Day weekend due to a special event, but it will reopen to regular business on Tuesday.
