Paducah, Kentucky – Storms and wildfire haze will complicate outdoor plans across western Kentucky on Sunday, with gusty winds and isolated hail expected by the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, a layer of milky haze from Canadian wildfires will linger until early next week, hovering between 10,000 and 15,000 feet.
Meanwhile, daytime heating will cause scattered thunderstorms throughout the region on Sunday afternoon, with some stronger cells capable of producing small hail and wind gusts exceeding 40 mph.
Paducah, Murray, and Hopkinsville face a 30%-35% chance of rain, while Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff have slightly lower odds. Lightning and heavy rain may occur quickly, particularly during the late afternoon commute or outdoor events.
Residents are advised to remain weather-aware and avoid travel during active storms. Keep phones charged and secure outdoor furniture or equipment that may be blown around by strong winds.
The wildfire smoke is expected to remain elevated but should not have a significant impact on air quality near the surface. However, visibility may appear hazy, particularly in the early morning.
Storm chances will decrease Sunday night, but additional rounds of rain are possible midweek.
