In Cadiz, neighbors help one another after an expected tornado makes landfall

TRIGG COUNTY, Tenn. – Following a recent bout of severe weather in southern Kentucky and Middle Tennessee, parts of Trigg County may have experienced tornadic damage Friday night.

Neighbors have been helping each other clean up after trees fell on homes. Debris was picked up and thrown hundreds of yards, and power went out after wires were ripped down.

While the National Weather Service has yet to assess the damage in Cumberland Shores, Trigg County Emergency Management says the area near Lake Barkley was one of the hardest hit in the county.

“Normally, because of the lake, storms go around us,” Nina Curtsinger said. “I just turned off the TV downstairs. As I walked down the stairs, I heard a boom. It sounded like something had hit my house. “That was a tornado.”

Curtsinger and her neighbors have been cleaning up the debris caused by heavy winds that picked up and threw parts of their home Friday night.

She claims that without the community and some family assistance, she would not have known where to begin.

“I have been upset, but I am grateful that I am here,” Curtsinger said. “I’ve got help. “I am aware of that.”

A man who spoke with WSMV4 off camera said he was inches from being seriously injured when a tree crashed through his home on Horseshoe Lane.

The damage rendered his home uninhabitable, which he has owned for nearly 30 years after serving in the United States Navy.

“It’s just difficult to see this much damage,” Dennis Brooks, a neighbor, said. “We’ve got some very fine neighbors here, and the world’s best, I think.”

According to Trigg County EMA, the area sustained significant damage, but no serious injuries were reported.

On Sunday, power crews were working in the Cumberland Shores neighborhood to restore power to homes that had been out since Friday night.

The NWS intends to survey the damage in the coming days.
