Christian County Now Registers Street-Legal Special Purpose Vehicles

Drivers in Kentucky will soon be required to register certain special purpose vehicles for use on highways, according to new state guidelines.

Under Kentucky Revised Statute 186.077, a “street-legal special purpose vehicle” must be registered to operate on highways and meet stringent requirements.

Humphries claims that this includes side-by-sides, mini-trucks, and even military-style or self-built vehicles—but not golf carts or most low-speed vehicles.

Before hitting the road, owners must gather several key documents, beginning with a title and proof of insurance.

Inspections will be handled by the sheriff’s department, and forms should be available by June 27.

Some vehicles that do not have a VIN may need to apply for one through the state, similar to how boats are registered.

Registration costs only $10—compared to $21 for a standard vehicle—and includes a motorcycle-sized plate.

Like a standard vehicle, owners keep the plate, which can be reused if they sell and buy another special purpose vehicle during the same registration period.

A yearly affidavit may also be required to confirm that the vehicle still meets safety standards.

According to Humphries, the process may change as the program progresses, but for the time being, everything begins with adhering to the KRS.

For more information, contact the Christian County Clerk’s Office or your local sheriff’s department beginning June 27 to obtain inspection forms.

(FOR EKY) Todd County Fiscal Court will vote on the measure on June 13th.
