An Indiana resident allegedly pulled what appeared to be a sword on an officer before stealing a police cruiser and fleeing to Kentucky.
A dramatic police chase that began in southwestern Indiana and ended in Kentucky on Monday has left many people stunned.
The incident began when officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop in Chandler, north of Evansville. Officers confronted the suspect, Nina Devillez, 31 years old, and fired shots. Devillez then stole a police cruiser, resulting in a high-speed chase.
Brian Richardson, a witness, described the situation to WFIE reporters.
“We heard sirens and then they headed down towards Evansville and then we heard tires screeching and the sirens come back and then we see a silver car go across the road,” said Richardson to the media.
Sgt. Todd Ringle of the Indiana State Police told WFIE that “at that point, a Chandler police officer fired his weapon multiple times.” “We know the suspect was shot at least once.”
The pursuit lasted more than 30 miles, crossing three counties and state lines. Negotiations over police radio exposed Devillez’s defiance.
“I shut the door calmly and said have a nice day, and he shot the ***ing window dog, hahaha,” Devillez says.
“On 2-31, a Rockport city police officer finally observed the vehicle. Sgt. Ringle told the outlet that he initiated a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop.
Devillez crashed into a field in Daviess County, Kentucky, bringing the chase to an end.
“The driver exited the vehicle and began to run. The Rockport City police officer continued to pursue him on foot. During the confrontation, the suspect was tased and eventually taken into custody,” Ringle told WFIE.
Court records indicate Devillez was facing an attempted murder case in Lawrence County, Indiana, and was out on bond at the time of the incident.
