Racers battle off against the rain and each other during the Soap Box Derby

HOPKINSVILLE, KY — The rain did not deter dozens of young racers who had been working hard to prepare their cars for the 19th Annual Soap Box Derby. With participants as young as seven years old, this year’s racers persevered despite inclement weather, and several smiling faces walked away with trophies.

On May 3, cars flew downhill at Ruff Park all day, attracting family members and members of the community to cheer on racers in various stock divisions. Super Kids races were also held throughout the day, with individuals with special needs racing alongside another driver to the finish line.

The Bluegrass Youth Racing Foundation introduces children to STEM through the fun concept of building a car and racing it. With some racers separated by less than a second, the double elimination races produced some incredible victories after weeks of preparation.

First place winners in each stock division will also have the opportunity to compete in the International Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. The Hopkinsville Soap Box Derby’s winners for the day were divided among the divisions.
