On Thursday, the Hopkinsville Tigers faced off against the Nelson County Cardinals in what turned out to be a nail-biting game that ended in a heartbreaking 4-3 defeat for the Tigers. Despite starting off strong and firing up their offense in the second inning, scoring one run off an error, the Tigers were unable to maintain their lead as the game progressed.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Nelson County managed to tie things up at two, taking advantage of a wild pitch by Hopkinsville’s Andrew Mayes that allowed one run to score. The Tigers found themselves trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Nelson County’s Rogers hit a homer on a 3-2 count, scoring two runs and securing the lead for his team.
Mayes, who started the game for the Tigers, put in a solid effort but ultimately allowed five hits and three runs over four innings, striking out three. Dylan Sweeney took over from Mayes, but unfortunately, the righty allowed two hits and one run over two innings, striking out one and walking zero, and ultimately took the disappointing loss for the Tigers.
Despite the tough defeat, Hopkinsville Tigers Varsity managed to rack up seven hits, with both Gavin Powell and Lucas Kaetzel delivering multiple hits for the team. The Tigers will now turn their attention to their final game in Florida, scheduled to take place tomorrow night against the Niceville Eagles at 6:00 PM.
